Cannot shift from gear to another gear
#1
I can start my Talon 260 in any gear and drive in that gear. I cannot shift to another gear without loud grinding. If I shut off the engine I can easily shift to any other gear easily and restart and drive in that gear. I am guessing it has something to do with the CVT system. Can anyone advise me where to start troubleshooting?

If it has a CVT system (belt drive) you are not supposed to change gear on the move. It will only have hi/lo/reverse anyway. If it is a normal foot change five speeder, it wont have CVT but a conventional motorcycle multiplate clutch. Some work like a motorcycle, LH handlebar lever operates clutch, on most, the first part of movement on the foot change lever, operates the clutch. Both these foot change types have a clutch adjuster sticking out of the clutch cover as a rule, and cable adjustment is needed on the handlebar lever type clutches.

If I start the engine in neutral I cannot move the shift lever to any gear. I could possibly force it but it grinds so I don't try. If I want to backup I can turn the engine off and easily place the shifter in reverse and restart the engine and back up. Then I shut off the engine and shift to either low or high gear and restart the engine and drive normally.

Probably just revving to hard at idle. Some CVT drives have a centrifugal clutch like a lawnmower, brake shoes fly out as speed rises and grip a brake drum. On some CVTs the belt gets slack enough at idle to slip. On these the pulley sheaves are shimable to compensate for variations in belt length, to ensure it does get slack enough at idle. So, if idle speed is OK but clutch is dragging, it could need shimming, or in the case of centrifugals, a shoe spring may have come loose.
