Hi everyone, first post here. I just got an unknown Chinese 250 quad that got started yesterday with a new battery. After riding for about 10 minutes, the engine stopped. I noticed the ignition coil wire was stuck to the engine and melted through. My friend who is a mechanic said there is no spark getting to the wire now. He told me to get a new cdi box and ignition coil. After doing some research, I noticed my cdi box is unlike the common three, and I have no idea what manufacturer or type of clone my quad is.
Any help identifying the manufacturer or type of clone this is, or which cdi box I have, would be a huge help!
The box looks a lot like the "ignitor" someone else on here was after last week, but I can't see why you would need to buy new everything because the coil wire shorted out. Pic of a Ram's head on the front may indicate bike is a Quadzilla RAM, but telling us the vin number or putting it into an on-line VIN decoder would help with identification
Thanks for your reply. I took off some of the plastics and found a placard with the manufacturer’s information. It is a 2005 Loncin, and takes a 7 pin cdi box that I found on Amazon for about 20 bucks. The parts should all arrive within a week or so. I’ll post an update once it’s running again. In the meantime, I’m going to repaint the red plastics a flat desert khaki.
Always do the "help diagnose stator" sticky tests before fitting a new CDI. Particularly that the earth wire is earthed, as you can blow a new CDI if there is another fault in the system.
Thanks for the heads up. I’ll make sure to do that before putting on the new cdi. New coil should arrive tomorrow, so I’ll see if that solves the problem first.
The new ignition coil did not solve the problem, still no spark.
Anyone know what problems burning through a spark plug wire might cause? I’m going to check the stator and then put a new cdi box when it arrives. Is this the right course of action to take?
After reading through the help diagnose stator sticky, I decided to pull out the kill switch wire from the cdi to test for a potential ground. It fired right up. Then I realized I couldn’t shut it off when I turned the key, so I turned the gas off and pulled the spark plug cap.
So, two questions: what’s the easiest way to shut off engine without kill switch? And two, does this mean I gave to find the ground somewhere from the kill switch wire before it gets to the cdi box?
I cut both kill wires, one at the switch, the other at the ignition. Then just wired the ignition kill straight to the cdi. It starts right up and quits when I turn it off with the key. I’m not confident in myself with wiring, so I simplified things as much as I could.
Thanks for all the help. This forum has been an awesome tool.
