I have a 98 polaris 400L sport with a HPD performance clutch kit on it with a HPD trail pipe. and i got it up to 70 mph. What the GPS said i was going. which is very accurate. but i just read that the 400L sport does 70-75 MPH stock. is what i read wrong or was i just not at top speet yet. i was on a long straight dirt road. I only weight 150 lbs. and 5'9" if anyone else had the same machine what is your top speed. and what mod's do you have

A stock Sport would be lucky to make it to 65 mph.

To my understanding, the goal of a mid range or trail pipe is for exceleration, the quickness of the bike. its not supose to increase top speed. Thats just what I've been lead to beleive anyway.

You could expect to gain 3-5 mph on top with the addition of a quality pipe.

well i dont know where you got your information about a stock 400L going 70-75.....but that is wayyy off there is no frikin way!@ like stated a mid range pipe doesnt help too much on top end....any way who cares about top speed....why just so u can say mine can go faster than yours?

I know that it is way slower than a Susuki LT 250 & Honda 250R. On a flat straight road about 2 miles long that we have travel to connect some of the mountain trails, we go wide open incase a state boy happens by which is hardly ever, anyway, my Scrambler has everything short of porting/compression changes & I'm at least a couple of minutes behind them. My friend on his Blaster was a couple of minute behind me. I think top speed on the 250s are about 72mph. Our Scrambler/Sports dont seem to have allot of gear ratio range to it as compaired to the 6 speed manual tranny's. So I guess we're in the 62mph range. I really like riding wide open every once in a while, what a rush.

My 400L Sport has :
Douglas .190 aluminum wheels
Holeshot XCT's
K&N Filter
DynoPort Pipe
DynoPort Race Silencer
Hot Seat Perf. Billet Head 10:1 Compression
909 Handlebars

From the performance gains of the above...my Sport will crack about 74mph. Stock is in the 65mph range..on flat... (downhill is another story) But, the low end grunt is astounding and hard to match. I was cruisin down a flat road the other day, with me (195 lbs), and my little bro(140lbs) on the back. Was goin probably 20mph or so...and hit it...and had the front wheels up for 50 feet with us both leaning forward. The combination I have into this quad is perfect for me. Nothing super major, but definitely with results.

Ride on.
