Heel Kicker Clutch
#3
I have said this before if you have a 04 and up 500 HO it is pretty hard to improve on the clutching ,I have a heelclicker clutch kit for my 04.5 HO and played around with all the settings and tryed different springs ,but was unable to find a setup that was better than stock ,with the stock blue spring and the HC weights the engagement was good right off idle but I lost low end and midrange but it did give me 3mph more on topend, which is of no use to me on the trails I ride ,the orange spring that comes with the HC kit gave it better low end and midrange (maybe equal to stock)but engagement was to high for my liking, tryed yellow spring that comes with kit had decent power but engagement was way to high, some people like the way the HC changes the engine braking characteristics of the clutch,it doesn't seem to brake as aggressively as stock which can be a good thing at times,I think that this kit does work good on earlier model years of 500 sportsman because that is what the testing was done on ,but for 04 and up which has a different helix then previous years I was unable to improve on the stock clutching with the heelclicker ,so until someone on these forums comes up with a heelclicker combination of springs and weight that will out run my stock clutch from 0 to 40 mph and is nice enough to share the info ,the HC kit will stay in the box and I will continue to run stock.

For low engagement with the Heelclicker weights, use the pink spring available from EPI (Erlandson Performance). Engagement will be like stock, but your will get the full benefit of higher rpm on shift out. EPI's maroon spring has a slightly higher engagement with a little more spring rate on shift out. The shift out rates between and the stock primary and heelclicker primary are extreme. There are a lot of good primary springs in between depending on the type of engagement you want.
