sounds like you may have water getting sucked into the carb, check your airbox for water.
2nd- is your reverse override being pushed?
3rd- your reverse sensor may be bad- a way to check if the sensor is bad is go above 5 mph, and hit the reverse override button while in forward and if the engine spitting/sputtering clears up when you hit the button, the sensor on your tranny is prolly bad-also your reverse light is usually lit up while in forward when the sensor is bad
4th-maybe your camshaft is bad, causing it to idle fine, but when you gas on it in gear, it just doesn't have what it use too. hope this helps, PB500

someone posted about this problem a few weeks ago and they had a torn intake boot. if thats not it it might be a loose plug wire.

Could bee the ETC switch out of adjustment causing your problem. Pop the cover off and see if the contacts are touching and adjust to fix.....

Don't forget the old worn out exhaust cam lobe. Hope that's not it. I would think if this is the case, it would have gotten worse over a period of time.

Sounds like a bad cam to me But check carb and intake as well when taking it apart. This is a good time for an upgrade too while its apart.

The problem is a dirty air filter, that simple, not trying to sound like I know it all. But I own a 500 sportsman and the exact same thing happend to mine and all I did was put a new air filter in. By the way how deep of water do you ride in????Because I ride 4 and a half foot deep water every day and have helpful tips for deeper water travel !!
