Default 38mm out of tune

I have a 250r I just put a 38mm PWK on and I cant get it to run right at all the carb is new from ESR it came with a 172main,52pilot,deg needle on 3rd, it sputters and spits half way thru the power band and pops and sputters big time on the top end I put a 178 main in and still does the same. I put the stock carb back on due to sand drags tommorow and it runs great im sure it will run even better if I could get the 38mm tuned Help Please!!

Mods are V-Force 3 reeds, fresh bore (stock) with Pro-lite, FMF gold,ct silencer, head shaved .010,Race gas (110) with R50 40:1

Thanks

well, if it spits and sputters up top, you need a smaller main jet, not a bigger one. try something in the high 160s and see how that works. make sure your idle mixture is right first though, then the mid-range, then the top end. the idle and midthrottle settings will affect top end a little bit. good luck
