86 fourtrax350 front end help
#1
i am having trouble with my 86 trx 350 front end. The left side"clicks"when the wheel is turned. And the left front wheel is sometimes not engaged when climbing a slippey hill. Before i tear into it i would appreciate any advice on how to best go about it. I am sure i will see the problem when i get it apart, but does anyone have any ideas? I am thinking i will be replacing that side of the axle.I am mechanically inclined but new to the quad thing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The problem sounds to be the CV joint. However, that machine had the oddest front end of any Honda 4x4 ever made and the parts are ridiculously expensive because every part on it is made in Japan and it was a rare machine even back then. Also, you cant purchase just the CV joint, but must buy the entire axle...IF it is even available. The TRX350 Fourtrax and 350 Foreman were added to the NOS parts data list in 2002 or 2003...along with the ATC250ES and SX. All parts not fitting other models were discontinued then, so you will only find one of these new if a dealer has one on the shelf or if Honda just happens to still have them in their warehouse available for dealer order. The aftermarket doesnt make replacement CVs for this model.
I would tear it down and give a thorugh inspection of what it is you exactly need and then search for the parts. If indeed you cant find what you need new, you may want to try hunting on ebay.

thanks, im going to take it apart tomorrow and see what im getting into. The online fiche i found seems to show teeth at the end of the axle but its kind of hard to make everything out from the pic. There is no detail for the CV joint. And you're right the left axle is something like $210. I am fortunate enough to have acccess to a machine shop so i may end up fabricating some parts. I dont have any experience dealing with CV joints so im kinda flying blind here but im sure i can figure it out. Thanks again for your input. Anyone else?

If the left wheel is "sometimes not engaged when climbing a slippery hill" then that doesn't sound like a CV joint problem .. That sounds like a problem with the limited slip clutches ..
Most of the front end parts for the 1986 TRX350 are discontinued , the 1986 model had smaller axles , bearings even the knuckle was smaller , 1987 thru 1994 they had larger axles , bearings etc.
If you need any shop manual sections just post or PM your email address and I will email you what you want ...

I've got a similar problem, it's more of a groaning/clicking which leads me to believe it's the differential. Anyone know if these supposed to have a little noise in them or not? It doesn't seem worn out as it binds right up on blacktop which leads be to believe it's engaging all wheels very well.

What is a friction modifier? I'll assume it's an additive for the oil? I just changed it and replaced it with 80-90 gear oil as it says right on the case. It seems to have gotten a little quieter since adding the new oil but it's still there. You can only hear it when it's not running....pushing it while turning.....picking up the rear end and moving it over to one side or the other, etc...

Ok, just looked up friction modifier...no I didn't add any.
I'll get some from the dealer and see what that does for me. Sounds like it could do the trick though if those plates tend to what to stick together.
Thanks - John
