Default smokey polaris 1996 sp 400 2 stroke

i bought this a year ago it has new piston and rings in it, it was using a ton of oil so i had it in the shop and they rebuilt the oil pump the spring was broke and the oil pump was staying open the plug fouled out put a new plug and havent ridden it since.

until the other night i took it through the field wide open and it was smoking alot , all i know is it runs good and my 400 explorer never smoked like this. could the oilpump be out of adjustment? its not real smokey at idle.

thanks hoyt

it could be burning the excess oil out or the cable to pump adjustment is not right.

you sure the rings are good? did they bore and hone the cylinder or just throw new rings in. that could be the other reason its smoking real bad.

Are you burning synthetic gold oil? The 400 Xplorer (wife's now, wanting sell if interested) has the same motor and it used to foul plugs. Talked to my dealer and he said to use polaris gold synthetic, have had little trouble since then. I was always turn the gas off on the 400 and both 50's, seems that this helps in starting and not fouling plugs so much.

Hope this helps!

i am burning synthetic gold , they had a shop do the engine work he said bored out and new piston was done since the oil pump rebuild its not as bad as it was.

i will do a compression check what should the compression be about? the machine runs good lots of power it only fouled one plug that was when the spring in the oil pump broke and the oil was free flowing.

i run pennzoil synthetic in both my 96 xplorer and my wifes 97 trail blazer and even though she rides slow most of the time i have not changed the NGK platinum plug for years. you can check the oil pump setting by removing the cover and see if the 2 marks line up at wide open throttle
