Try rocking the atv back and forth while attempting to shift VIa foot shifter. Using the ES, be sure the battery is in full charge, and rock back and forth as shifting. Hope this helps

i've tried the rocking method, nothing. i can move the manual shifter a little bit both ways but it just wont change gears. It sounds like it is moving the shifting motor when i rotate the manual shifter.

Sounds like the shifter plate. The early 2000 models had an update on the shift plate but I think it expired in 04. You will need to remove the front of the motor to inspect it (there are several threads on this problem). It is an easy fix for about $40.00 if you do the labor.

well i got the front of the engine apart, the shift plate all seems to be ok, i took it all off and it has some wear but is not broke, i tried turning the shift cam with an allen wrench in the center and it will just move a little bit each way but will not shift into another gear. Please dont tell me i need to take the engine out of the frame and start taking it apart. thanks

Just a very little wear on the shift plate is enough to make it not work. Mine had spread just a very tiny amount but that was all it took. I would go ahead and replace if it you have the front off, because more than likley it will go bad on the 2002 model. I didn't think mine was bad enough to cause the problem but replaced it anyway, fixed the problem and haven't had any yet. If you go to the Honda place for the part be sure to get the updated model.

ok im an idiot, i got to looking closer and put it back on the shaft and operated it manually, the plate is broke, it was just broke so straight and clean that it looked like it was suppose to be like that. Guess i will have to order the part if i can just find it.. does anyone have any advice on putting the cover back on while holding everything in place like that little spring and ball thing?

Eather stand the quad on it's tail and assemble or put some grease on th e3 ***** to hold the bearing in place.
I used a white lithium grease that will disolve easily in the oil
