Good kids quad for 12yr old?
#1
I have a 12year old son who has a 2001 polaris 90 sportsman. I'm not pleased with the way polaris has designed this quad though. My son likes the mud, but the quad hates the mud. Polaris has put the stator in a open spot and it tends to get wet and muddy. I have replaced the stator 3 times ($100 per time) and I am determined not to do it again.
What other brand or type of 90 is out there that is good for muddy trail riding?

my 13 year old rides a 350 honda rancher dont mess with the little quads put him in a 350 cc or bigger they grow like weeds after 12 years old, he will have no problems on a bigger machine.heres a few pics of him and his ride.

in some aspects i agree with lt80 some kids are not mature enough to handle a bigger machine. thats the reason I hope every parent gets there kids in the saftey class if offered he learned alot. he is always in control and knows what not to do to get himself hurt.

most kids at 12 are getting to be about 5 ft , my kid is a skinny 5'3 and him riding a 90 cc size machine doesnt work. when he took his atv saftey class there wasnt a kid in there who was riding a mini most the kids were riding 500s and bigger. I realize this was probablyjust for the class but during there riding time they all did fine while staying in control.

If they're always with a parent or responsible adult is one thing if they never ride alone with kids their own age , i know some riders that are 21 and older who shouldn't be allowed to ride anything more powerfull that a 90cc quad ; but they're concidered an adult by law and there's nothing we can do about this but morn for them when they get stupid and injuried or killed ! just my 2 cents on this one.

my son is 12 also. he has been riding a 1985 lt230s quadsport scince he was 10. He loves it and so do I. I have one actually two of my own. a 1985 lt230s and a 1988 lt230s. They are a great quad to ride. Not to heavy and big enough that your kid will be happy with it for years to come. Plus they are everywhere! Just another idea.

I agree with you *****, lots of kids are not mature enough that goes for plenty of adult too, my kid only rides with me and i have taught him right and he knows what can happen for acting like a idiot ( he has seen a few accidents) and 2 just bad freak accidents. thats the reason i put him on a utility I got him thinking its just good for muddin.
parents can do what they want, put there kids on the machine they want, im confident in his riding ability , he respects the land and the laws (he was taught right).
as far as his size 5'3" 115 # he fits the machine good handles the full time 4x4 steering great on all day rides. if people think his machine is to big then alot of them women who are his size better trade there rides in for some 90 cc rides.

You are correct. I've built a few LT's for guys wifes/gf's.
My daughter raced a LT80 till 15 and was as big as your kids. IMO, as soon as a kid gets big enough to throw the machine around, the parents think they are too big.

I think I freak more when i see a kid riding without a helmet more then i do a kid riding a big wheeler. after seeing 2 freak accidents last year me nor anyone in my family will ride without a helmet. 1 guy split his skull open and spent weeks in the hospital and his brain didnt fully recover he flipped off the back and smacked his head on the concrete.
it really bugs me when i see people wearing no helmets.
