Default Gun Mount for a 2010 X2

Im looking for an Idea other than a scarab to mount a gun to my atv. I would love to get one mounted to the front box but I do not want to cut holes in my tool box that I keep extra close in.

I was wondering if i could make a loc n ride mount to the koplin gun clamps for the back??

your options are unlimited if you want to get crafty

heres what i came up with for backrest with grab handles for the wife:

I recently bought a '09 550 Sportsman XP. I installed a winch and bought the front cargo box.

**CLICK ON ALL THE PICS TO VIEW THEM FULL SIZE**

I take my wife riding on the local trails and we fit nicely 2-up, both on the seat. Only problem is there isn't anything great to hang onto. The extended rack rail would help but not be the greatest. I knew what i wanted and couldn't find exactly what i needed so i designed a Lock n Ride add-on.

Here is the final piece:

I started with 1/2" treated plywood and added 4 LnR plugs ($15pr) and two handles i took off of a cheap trowel ($3ea) from menards. I countersunk the screws so they would not scratch my back rack.

Details about the LnR plugs: You can buy them from a Polaris Dealership or online for $15/pr. Here is a closeup look. I used the ones from my stock front rack since the cargo box came with two new ones. They were longer than the pair I bought. When locked down the rubber bushing expands, holding tight.

Next I removed the hardware and wrapped the plywood with a Camo canvas fabric. I cut some treated lumbar to a make a reclined backrest. Added wrap around padding, covered that with the canvas. Attached with stainless decking screws. Voila! Done!!

I had the lumber, screws and tools. I bought the fabric, padding, handles and a pair of LnR plugs. Total around $45 dollars.

What makes the boat plug type lock-n-ride style system work is the expandable rubber plug with a nut that digs into the rubber on the bottom. If you can find a rubber stopper that is 7/8" and make a nut that digs into the rubber so you can tighten it from above I think the Kolpin gun clamps could work. Get a rubber plug, drill the right sized hole to match the Kolpin screws and a nut that fits the screws. My thought would be to notch one side of the nut to leave ridges and valleys like a handsaw blade. Tighten it enough that the ridges are digging into the rubber plug before installing.

PS Nice job rugnuts! That's quite the backrest you made.

i would buy a pair of LnR plugs, then get the kolpin clamps
mount the kolpins and plugs to a piece of flatbar or even like 1/4" plexiglass
it could be either two seperate pieces or one unit. then they would be easy on easy off, no holes drilled.

I made mine fit the 4 bolts on the outside that hold the fender to the rack, used longer bolts and drilled gun boot mount to fit the holes, rubber mounted with 1/8th inch thick rubber belting.

I just did it the easy way on our 850, bought a set of Kolpin grips and mounted them to the lid of the box on the front and carry the rifle in a soft case. I have a large box/seat on the rear where I could have mounted them but on a rough trail I want to see where that $1000 rifle is, not laying on the trail behind me.

Yeah, that would rot if you got to the end of a technical section of trail only to discover you lost your rifle somewhere along the way.
