Default 2005 800 sportsman

I have a 05 800 sportsman that I am having an issue with. I can ride it for about an hour and shut it off and then it will not start until I let it set for about 30 min. It dose not seem to be overheating, the fan comes on. Would anyone know what may be the problem?

welcome to the forum. when you try to start it and turn the key on do you hear the fuel pump cycle then turn off? you should hear a hum for a couple of seconds when you first turn the key on.

I would first check under the fuse panel, has 4 fuses(located under the front panel) as there were a few machines that had a problems on the wires in the bottom of the fuse holder shorting out intermittently against the frame.Plus if I remember correctly there is a 20 amp thermal fuse if you follow the harness back from the fuse panel also that could be the problem(getting hot and killing power until it cools off) OPT

Hey OPT, can you tell me more about the fuse panel problem? I have a 2008 500 Touring that has a short. It will run the battery dead if left sitting, burn the main 20 amp fuse when riding, the speedo panel stays lit up even when the key is out. I took off all the panels and handled every wire trying to find a frayed wire on metal and came up with nothing, but in my handling the wires and fuse panel i fixed the problem (probably temporary). What was the fix in the fuse panel, would wrapping my frame under the panel in tape keep it from shorting?

Try taking the screws out of the fuse holder, use either tape or silicone on the bottom where all the wires go in to isolate the fuse holder wires from the mounting bracket. We had shorts in this area on some 800s,cant remember if any on the 500s,but sounds like your in the right area if its doing better! OPT
