Lt80 top end rebuild issues
#1
Hi, I recently bought an lt80 ( i think its a 1999) without checking it out properly.
I am not a mechanic by any means but, the quad started so I took it home. When I came to take my son out on his new quad it struggled to start and when it did It was weak and cut out after a few mins.
I did a comp test on it and found it at 75psi. I watched so.e videos and felt comfortable with doing the work myself so ordered a kit online.
when I opened it up the piston was badly damaged so I did the work needed and got my local mechanic to torque the head up to 115 inch pound.
It started first time i let it run a while and then rode it for a few minutes before it sounded a little bit louder and felt like it binded up before shutting off. Tried to start it again and nothing
I rang my local atv specialists and he said it could be hydro locking or something like that and there might be fuel or water trapped and to take the spark plug out and try turn it over. I did this and it turned over straight away. I put the spark plug back on and turned it over. It did the same again after a few minutes, binded up and came to a stop.. I repeated the process again before loosing heart and posting a thread. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

Is there any oil getting to the engine? Either there should be an oil fuel mix at 30 to 1 or there should be oil pumped from the oil tank into the carburettor. I always use a little oil/fuel mix when I start a rebuilt LT engine, even if it is supposed to still have the pumped system, just in case the system isn't working properly. I can then remove the pipe at the carb to check if oil is dribbling out, just for a few seconds. If oil hasn't been getting into engine, and it has seized twice, your new top end may be as bad as the old one by now.
The "hydraulic lock" problem always occurs when the engine has been stopped as the fuel tap, when on run, stops fuel from exiting the tank once the engine stops. Although the float needle is supposed to do this too, if the tap is on prime, or faulty, and the float needle leaks, the engine fills with fuel and locks solid. Once you take the plug out, fuel can shoot out the plug hole when you spin the engine over on the starter, there is always a lot comes out, and it can catch fire, as I well know, unless you stop the ignition from sparking.
