I have told my local dealer to hold a 2002 Sportsman 400. I am planning on getting it Monday the 15th. I was just wondering what I need to do to maintence wise. Also how long should I wait before I do any pulling or steep hill climbing. Is their anything I need to do the 4x4 on the atv?? If their is anything else I need to know please let me know thanks.

Grease after submerging in mud water, use low gear for pulling and hillclimbing ( which is fine even new, but don't overheat the motor by prolonging a work or climbing session. ) Read your manual for any info about tweeked mixes, I'm not a polaris person I dunno if you start with stright standard mix on the 400 or not.

The new Sportsman 400's are 4 stroke.

Your manual should tell you everything you need to know. I believe the first service is at 20hrs which would involve an oil and filter change, greasin' all the zerks, and checking all the fluids. The cooling system in particular seems to be low after break in due to air purging from the system.

I think the manual says grease every 50 hrs, but more frequently after serious mud/water rides (I would say after every serious mud ride to be safe).

Keep the radiator free of mud to prevent overheating.

Use low to tow/pull anything or if you have to slow down to go over/through something (believe manual says use low anytime below 7 mph). Follow that rule and your belt should last a long time.

As said above, the 400 is a four stroke so no gas/oil mixing is required.

I'm sure you'll enjoy your new machine.

the 400 is a nice machine, and i hope you enjoy it, but you may want to invest in the optional engine braking kit, but you may feel no need to. it all depends on the type of ridind you do, but EBS is nice

Where I live it is very flat I will never ride in very steep conditions. I dont think the EBS will be needed for my riding.

Hey atvrider5, Congrats on you decision to go with the Sportsman. Out of the two you were considering, I think you’ll be happy with your decision. As for maintenance, HomerS pretty much summed it up. Good Luck!

Take a closer look at your new quad and you'll see what you need to grease. There are about 20 something grease zerks, ya that's a lot, but it only takes 2 minutes at the most to grease them up. Use the Polaris grease...there's 2 kinds...all purpose grease for the bushings and ball joints, and U-Joint grease which is for, you guessed it, the U-Joints.
