Belt Cover
#1
It looks like a badly worn Dayco belt is going to cost me a few hundred. I took my '99 Scrambler 500 mudding a few months ago and a slipping belt caused the cover to warp. I have a new 700 belt now but the terrible noise of the clutch hitting the cover is becoming too much.
My question here is will the '03 cover bolt right on? Does the '03 Scrambler cover have a drain? I need both front and rear covers. I plan to use the 2" trailer ball trick to get the primary clutch off. Anything I should check on my clutches while they are off?
Thanks for the help.

Get the stock year of covers and drill a hole in the bottom and put in a rubber grommet. This shouldnt cost you more than $150.You can find used ones on Ebay for about half that.

The 03 covers are better than the past. They will not warp like the past ones, they have the drain hole and they are slightly wider and thicker but will bolt up to any of the past years. DO NOT go with the stock one or you might be in the same boat some yrs from now. Its well worth the money.

I tried the trailer ball trick and it just wouldn't do it. It got so tight that I was worried about stripping the threads out, even with the proper clutch puller it did the same thing, then I put the impact wrench to it and she came right off. Not even a month ago I was helping a buddy of mine work on a 1986 trailboss 250 and the trailer ball worked like a charm. Just letting you know that they can be pretty tight sometimes.

Use a good dose of compressed air to thoroughly blow out both clutches....don't inhale the dust. (cough). You can use a non-residual cleaner to wipe the faces (that's where the belt rides) Acetone on a Scotchbrite bad, cleans great.

Thanks for the info. I called around to some dealers and the inside and outside covers are each $84. Not a bad price. I'm surprised the price actually when down from past years!
I'm going to order them on Monday and will hopefully have them on by the weekend. I'll let you guys know how it works out.

Howdy,
just found this on a search.
Just pulled my cover and drained about a quart of black water on my 02 scram 500 (120 hours) (the wife likes to take puddles fast).
I will add that once the slipping started, we did not try to go any further,,,we just loaded it up and went home, and it sat one day.
I do not see any noticable wear or damage.
I hope to just dry it out and be done.
What is the best way to install a drain?
Is there anything I should do while I'm in here. (other than above)
Any tips would be great!
Is it possible to seal the belt from future water issues?
