Default Clutch advise - AC 300

Hi, wonder if anyone can give me some advice.
on my 1999 AC 300 the clutch sounded like it was slipping a bit so I dug out the service manual and tightened the screw up and backed it off 1/8 turn.
Trouble is this doesn't let the rocker pedal engage. So I slackened it off a bit more and can engage first gear but it shrugs forward slightly and then no drive. If I rest my foot on the pedal as if to take it back into neutral I get more drive. however I can't find a bit point where the wheels will turn and the gear selector pedal will put into gear and out of gear.
I changed the oil today in case that was the problem but it hasn't made a lot of difference. I also tried to adjust the cable at the pedal end, but again can;t find a good balance.

Reckon its just worth putting a new clutch in, or should I just persavere with the adjustments. On the clutch adjustment screw, is it an extreme fine tune? Is there going to be a very small margin on the screw, like 1/16 of a turn that will allow the clutch to work, or should it start to bite anywhere?

Lots of questions I know, but not many Arctic Cat dealers in Britain, and no-one in my area who actually knows anything about them. Also would like to save the £500 ($750) a clutch replacement has been quoted at.

Many thanks

Nick.

Default Clutch advise - AC 300

I have a 2000 250 Cat (Same as a 300) and have had trouble with shifting in the past. Recently I adjusted my clutch as it was slipping into second real bad, but had no trouble at all, in fact I found it to be quite forgiving. I did however experience troubles like what you are describing before, and what it eventually ended up being was a stretched shifter linkage cable. I would seriously consider checking that out if I were you. If you do find that the cable needs to be replaced her is a huge tip for you: In 2003 Cat switched to a direct shifter linkage (No Cable). You can easily switch to this type of linkage on your 99, and spend less money than the new cable is worth as well. I am from Canada and the cable linkage is a terrible design as it is prone to freezeups. Switching to a solid linkage was the best mod I have done, no more guess work, freezups, adjustments or stretched cables.

Hope this helps.

Hey nicksaab, I totally agree with cancat. Set your clutch like the book says and get rid of that shifter cable!! A friend of mine had a 99 300 and we adjusted on the cable almost every hour until we placed the linkage off my 03 250 and it worked great!!

Thanks for the advice guys. As Arctic Cat stopped importing into the UK in 2001 I think, my dealer is trying to source me a direct linkage from the US. If he can;t get one, I'll put a new cable on and let you know how I get on. Apologies for the delay in thanking, time just runs away!
