Default clutch kit question?

OK doober I'll bite,

what is the differance between a clutch mod and a clutch kit. I mean I know what the kit is but I assumed that when they spoke about a clutch mod they were refering to installing a clutch kit.

The mod only includes taking off your secondary clutch, then taking off the retainer and drilling a new hole in it (to change preload on your spring) gives you a bit more bottonm end. The kit gives you a new spring and wet clutch springs and gives you way more bottom and mid. I think it was minehunter who originally did this and posted pics a long time ago.

Default clutch kit question?

Here is a link to some fangoe's pics of when he did the trany mod, and this is not something the dealer probably knows about. It does basicaly the same thing as an aftermarket secondary spring, it puts more pressure on the secondary clutch to keep it ingaged at a lower ratio for longer, this will give you better lowend power and acceleration. A clutch kit comes with the secondary spring, springs for the sprague clutch on the primary clutch side, and some kits include rollers for the primary clutch.

1wook,
I wasn't able to download your picture, but Cat sent the dealers
a picture of a template that you cut out and it goes over the spring
retainer on the secondary clutch for both the 400 and 500.(different
templates for the 400 and 500). They also state to take out opposing
rollers in the primary clutch on the 500 only, which should help bring the
R's up a little.

Here is a new link. I have never heard of taking half of the rollers out. Snox314 have you done or know someone that has? Did it give you more top end? Yo don't happen to work at a dealership do you?

Default clutch kit question?

1wook,
Yes I do work at a Cat dealership. I have not taken any of the rollers out of
a 500 yet. When you do this you are only taking two rollers out and they need to
be opposing rollers.(This is only for 500's) I don't think it will help your top end
it should just help you accelerate quicker and backshift faster. I have installed a
EPI clutch kit in a 500(I only installed the new rollers and secondary spring and left
the engaugement springs out) and was very happy with the performance.(Top end
was very close to the same).

Default clutch kit question?

snox314,
I have a 2004 500 auto, According to Dalton's Web Site simply replacing the secondary spring may help me out with my issues. I have stock tires (I may move up 1" to the 26" mud lites) so I do not need to compensate for that. All Im after is a little better low end performance. It just seems soft in the low rpm's. What is your thoughts or ecperiance with this?
Thanks,

Default clutch kit question?

freetrapper,

I would try the spring in the secondary clutch for sure. Also while I was in to
the clutches I would remove 2 opposing rollers and try it. If you don't like it put the
rollers back in. I think this combination would improve low end and backshifting
pretty good, especially if you go with a little bigger tire. Let me know what you think
after you try it.

Default clutch kit question?

snox314,

Thanks. If you have read any of my other posts on this subject you know that my dealer is not at all interested in helping me on any type of mod or kit. So this will be all on me. So with that in mind I will be waiting untill later this winter, after my factory warrentee is no longer in effect. They specificly told me not to change tires or "mess" with the cluch or the warentee would be voided.
