Check the upper frame tubes on both sides of the airbox and the bracket welded between them where the front of the seat goes. You have to remove that plastic cover that goes around the airbox and glovebox. Check for chipped/cracking paint there too. If the paint is cracking, the tube is flexing and will crack.

I have stock radial tires on my 650 and it steers quite hard; much harder than the Polaris Sportsman or Yamaha Grizzly. I've increased tire pressure and it helps a little. Even on the showroom floor there is a remarkable difference.

For those of you who have switched to 589's, Mud Lites or Mud Bugs, did it make your machines steer easier?

Thanks !

Ditch the stock tires!!! The Goodyear Radial MTR's have a lightweight sidewall that gives when turning. Almost feels like you're riding on the edge of the rim. Switching to an aftermarket tire makes a dramatic improvement in steering.

kwc is 100 percent right except he said it feels like you are riding on the rim and well a person actually is riding on the rim my stock ones are all chipped up and they only have about 50 miles on them i heard of some guy making a couple little cuts in his headlight pod and setting the handlebars forward i believe it was and he said it made a huge difference as for me i guess i don't notice it being hard steering i personally like the harder steering that way when you are driving very aggressive you won't have a tendency of overcompensating when you are in a sideways slide and thanx for the frame update i will check it out and see if everything is a ok

Weez440,

How are the 27" 589's on packed terrain or gravel roads? Do they ride rough or vibrate with rugged tread like that? Are they loud?

Thanks,

i would have to say the 27 inch 589's are argueably one of the best tires you can put on the 650 if you wanna run alot of different terrain they are aggressive enough in the mud where they do great, they really go well in the snow, they have a stiff sidewall to keep from body roll, and they don't ride to bad i can run down the highway and you can hear them howl a lil bit but not bad, and they don't vibrate anywhere near as bad as say mudzilla's. 27 inch is a very nice size for a 650 specially with the cdi and clutch kit that i have i crack it down in the bottom of a mud hole and i am still hanging a wheelie out of it so there is not much horsepower lost by only going up 1 size. i basically bought these tires to just run when i expect to be going through stuff but i put them on and never took them off. if you do spend alot of time in the mud i would suggest vampires mudzilla's or bi/tri claws?? i think thats what they are called.
