Rango726,
There is a seal on the belt housing. It can be replaced if needed. However, if you are careful when you take the cover off and it does not tear it can be reused.
It sounds like you may have gotten water into the belt housing through the vent on the belt housing.
If you let the motor warm up and then remove the drain plug and rev up the engine a little it will dry its self out and you do not need to remove the housing.
If you remove the housing and it does not reseal well then you can get water into the housing when the water is just over the skid plate. Otherwise its got to come in the vent tube.
I have not had to do this on my TRV yet (probably will eventually). But, have helped do it to several other machines.
Hope this helps

Hey There, I have a 01 500 auto CAT and I had the same problem today while riding through water. I had to let it dry out for about 30 minutes. Drove fine after that. Then i went off into a deep hole by accident and got wet again. Now it makes a horrible noise and smells like burnt belt. It even sounds like it wants to turn the belt in Nuetral. Can the belt get hot and stretch? Is the R&R of the belt just that unbolt cover and remove old one and replace with new? Please help me ......
