Default '06 TRV 400 4x4 20% off MSRP - good?

I'm trying to get into a TRV 400 and I've got 2 dealers down to $5495, or about 20% below MSRP. Is this a good target or should I push for more? The 2006 supply of TRVs is starting to dry up out here in the midwest.

I had one place say they would match $5349 from another dealers quote (several states away) but I would need it in writing to prove it, which I don't have - only verbally over the phone.

I have no need to go over 40mph, but will I need the 500 due to my weight (300lbs) plus an additional rider (~175lbs)? Since the transmission has a high and low range, I figured not, but input would be apreciated.

FYI, my quoted prices include everything except state sales tax. I have not asked about the $300 CAT CASH since is suppossedly expired, but I'll try for it during the deal making process...

Welcome! ATV's are starting to drop in price, so as long as they are not going to run out, the longer you wait the better deal you could get, but that sounds like a good price to me for the TRV. The 400 will be fine, however you will need to get a good 300 miles on it before it is broken in. My 2004 400 was such a dog and I was really disappointed in it, until I got over the 300 miles. It was like a different machine. Good luck!!!!

Thanks for your quick response, especially since this is my first post. I'm the kind of person that likes "just enough" so the 400 appeals to me as long as I can get up steep hills. It can be slow, but I want to get to the top. I did notice that A.C. has dropped the 500 for the TRV in 2007. It will be either the 400 (still with no diff lock) or the 650 with a diff lock. I can only imagine the price on the new '07 TRV 650. I used to own 2 of the old long chassis CJ-6 Jeeps, so a long chassis ATV appeals to me as both unique and useful.

The only ATV I have ever ridden any significant mileage is my best friends 2000 Polaris 500 Sportsman Auto. It's been fun, but I want to do some nature viewing / trail riding with my wife.

Is 25% below MSRP pretty much the max savings when you get toward the fall time? Just wondering how far I can push it. I got a little taken once on a new car and have been cautious ever since.

Does anyone else have an A.C. 400 TRV they can comment on? The 400 TRV option was new for '06 so probably not many folks have been on one yet, but maybe I'll get lucky here on this website...

(It still shocks me that these things are the same price as a very nicely restored CJ Jeep!!!)

is it the money issue not to get the 500? becausse not saying it is a bad bike but the 500 has 25% more power and your size like mine is biger than some, when i bought my 2nd trv i ask my dealer about the 400 he said dont bother you wont like it after a while the price diff was only 500$

Money is a concern. Maybe if I keep on the fence long enough the dealers I'm working with will close the gap for the price as well. I didn't know it was a 25% difference in power, so that is something to think about. I'm trying to get out the door for $5999.99 max (so I can say, less than $6k ya know...). If I could get the 500 TRV for $5,660 before tax, that would do it. But, can I get $1,939 off of MSRP (~26%)??? If it can be done, I might try for it...

Originally I thought the 400 oil/air cooled would be nice due to reliability and maintenance, but I found out quick that it too has a fan, so I'm not sure if either is more reliable than the other.

If you are a just enough type of person the 400 will work just fine. I checked some local places here and they were both at your $5495 price. They are best price dealers too so there is no going down on that price here. So, that said your price is really fair but maybe for fun see about the difference on the 500. Yes the 2007's will only have the 400 and the 650. You won't really need a diff lock, I have one on my H1 and the times I have used it I am sure I didn't really need it. I can only think of 1 time on my 400 that it would have been nice to have it. 99% of the time you don't. Also, the 650 TRV's are going to cost big bucks. Over $8,000 easy is my guess.

Both the 400 and 500 have pretty much the same reliability. That is good, as both are darn near bullit proof.

Did you get a chance to test ride one? Have your wife along so she can try it too, and you can get a feel for the passenger. Good luck,

Now to make things more difficult on myself, I've located a brand new A.C. 2005 TRV 500 4x4 for $ 5,695. Now we're talking old vs. new body style. Larger vs. smaller engine. Just $200 more for the year older 500 model. How would any of you handle this choice???

I have not tested the older body style, only the newer one. Looks like there is some difference in the rear seat. My wife has tested neither...

I just got done shopping (took me a couple of months) I considered the TRV. One dealer I talked to said don't buy the 400 - won't have enough power. This dealer did not have a TRV in stock so he was not trying to sell me anything.

Catterman suggested the dealer below to me - He still has this 05 500 TRV in stock. He called me after I had my deal done and he seemed ready to deal. This is what he has on his web site as a price and it is the same price your are getting quoted. I think the 05 will only have a 6 month warrenty and that is something else you want to figure in.

You could call this guy and see how low he would go as a benchmark.

My wife was not very happy when she found out I did not get the two up model.

Oh yeah - Bear please feel to wheigh in on all of the power the 400 has.....

That is a difficult one, I like the 500, but in a couple of years is will look older then the 400 due to the body style change. Good luck and let us know what happens.
