Checking the rear drive fuild level on my 2006 500 auto.. removed the plug and the fuild level is well below the plug..should the level be just below the plug?

 

Should be even with the bottom of the fill hole.

I checked both of my differentials at about 70 miles of riding and found they both only had about 50% of the required amount of fluid in them. I bought a quart of 75w-90 and used about 2/3 of it to get the differentials full.

 

It shouldn't be to the bottom of the fill hole- it should be 1" from the bottom of the fill hole- check your owner's manual. If you fill it up all the way its not going to hurt anything but it may leak out from the axle seals. Some of the 06-07 models are now coming with a small check bolt (like 8mm head)- it just depends on when your H1 was made. The older non "AC" gearcases should be full to the threads...

 

There is no mention of rear drive fluid level in the manual, thats why i asked here.

 

He's right. My owners manual and service manual both say nothing about level. All the service manual says is pour the correct amount of lubricant in to the differential. The owners manual says "4. After all the oil has been drained, install the drain plugs ad tighten securely." No mention of installing new lube even. My 2001 manual lso does not mention level for the differentials either. Standard mechanical practice is fill to bottom of the fill hole.

 

A little more fluid than needed wont hurt anything. My service manual says 8.5 oz in the rear, and 9.3 in the front. But this is for the V2. Stick your pinky finger in the hole, and feel downward, if you have oil on your finger nail, your in good shape[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img]

 

On my 03 500 I had I was told the same thing go up to the fill hole. And then I busted my rear seal. I was just doing what I had read.

Next on my 05 650 V2 I check my levals and it was low and I filled it up to the fill hole and busted my seals AGAIN!!!!!

SO NO DO NOT FILL IT TO THE HOLE!!!!!!!!!! YOU WILL BUST YOUR SEALS!!!!!
