2005 trv500 problems
#1
My bike wont drive in high, and will just barely move in low. It is revving just fine but wont move. It does look like it wants to. when I put it in reverse, it revs real funny and blows black smoke out of the exhaust.
I pulled the belt housing off, but this is my first 4-wheeler and I am not sure exactly what I am looking for.
is there some sort of clutch on the gear that spins the belt? it spins but doesnt seem like it spins fast enough.
how can I tell if my belt is stretched out?
any suggestions?
I know I ask alot of questions but I am new to this, I am a jet engine mechanic and can somewhat find my way around a car, I just dont know the specifics on this machine.
thanks in advance

Are you sure the black smoke is coming out of the exhaust and not the belt housing breather tube? They both come out the back of the machine.
Sounds like you could have a belt that is either wet, has oil on it, or is fried/stretched. Which I have found to be a little rare for an AC.
If you do not have one go on line and get yourself a service manual for your machine. The money you spend on it will be well worth it.

With the belt housing off, you should be able to see two large pulleys.
If you can rev the engine and neither pulley turns, you probably have a burned out clutch. Could also be the sprag clutch that enables engine braking. On my 400, it's a small clutch that sits just outside of the main clutch, both of which are behind the primary pulley.
If you rev the engine and the front pulley turns but not the back, then you have a cvt problem. Most likely the belt is worn out.
