Get the bigger bike if that's what fits you and suits your riding style. ATVs get bigger and better every year, and chances are good that his next upgrade will be bigger and better yet. You don't want to be left too far behind if you intend to ride together.
If your just putting around the trails and your bikes are not maxed out, then who cares what you get. Just go out and have fun riding together.
