While I agree, the automatics are a maintenance headache, they are a reliable unit for Cat and Suzuki. When you compare them to the shifters, I'm sure the reliability of the shifters out weigh the auto's. I don't have anything to support my thoughts except that I do ride often with friends that have auto's. Yami's, Polaris' and Kawi's. There are Suzuki automatics too but they never seem to have any problems. The jury's still out on the Honda's. They have problems but the problems seem to be more related to anything other than the tranny.
It seems every manufacturer out there with a 500 cc or larger bore, has a faster acceleration than our Cats. But that's got a lot to do with the gearing. My AC 500i, has out mudded most of the competition. Without a doubt, this machine could take on more, larger machines if the owner were up to the performance of the machine he rides... Win some, loose some...
I will never own anything but a shifter. It's nice to be able to stay in gear when you need it. Besides, automatics are for the family car and buses...
