I remember in the early seventies my dad was telling me that the ATC90 would float. I believe if it is light enough and the tires are big enough it will float. I can not picture a typical ATC250r floating upright easily, but I can picture an atc90 with stock baloon tires floating.

Hate to bust your bubble Chris142, but you said quads do not float. Well the 95 King Quad I had floats just fine, along as it is in stock form. It will not float with rider after installing a winchbumper and winch, I have floated many a beaver pond that way. Even after the install of the winch and bumper the wheeler will float without me on it I took a wrong turn one evening and ended up crossing the wrong end of a pond and it was alot deeper then I imagined and the quad sucked water and it sank, but when I jumped off it came back to the surface and I swam and pulled the quad to the other side. Of course it sucked too much water in it and would not start so it was a very cold tow job{May black bear hunt} back to the truck. But you will find out some quads will float in certain situations just like 3 wheelers but I would not suggest running out to see if your quad will float as it could get expensive, I found out by accident and took advantage of it before I added heavy accessories to it.AlaskaBoy.

I grew up in the sweet spot of three wheeler times. I was 12 in 1982 and everyone I knew had a three wheeler. Honda’s would suck in water when it got to deep. They always said “the Yamaha would float”. I had a 225r or 250r shaft drive, and certainly went through the deepest swamps I could find. I was riding with a friend in a flooded gravel pit when the bottom dropped away. I probably weighed 80 lbs and it felt tippy. I just kept the gas on and it slowly crept forward about 10 yards across maybe 5 ft deep water. We were far from touching. I was scared it would capsize. The front was up and about 3-4 inches of the rear tires above water.
The air intake was always said to be up high. The whole tank and handle bars were above water. I climbed on the seat and I don’t think I got wet at all.
True story. For a small kid with good balance you can ride a stock Yamaha through as deep water as you want as long as you don’t flip it.
