I have 2. An 85 and an 85 1/2. They seem to be fairly reliable. The main weak point is the waterpump and its seal. Everytime I build one, I replace both. They seem to have more low end than a 250r. The r will leave it in the dust in top tho. This is in stock form. The z is really loud compaired to the r and t-3. Of course it will vibrate more than the counterbalanced r. The turn a lot of heads and are fun to ride. R or z, I'll take the r. But, I am a Honda man. If you find a nice z, go for it!

The 85 Tr-Z is a 5speed, and that is the only reason the Honda will take it on Top-end. The tri-z is quicker than the Honda but tops out at 65mph. The Honda does have a smoother suspension. I had both machines and the Yamaha always stayed together. I was always tweaking on the Honda. I aways got alot more attention on my Tri-Z cause you dont see great looking ones very often.

I ave never heard of the TRI-Z 1/2.
I know in 86 they changes to a 6 speed i believe and made a couple more changes. Maybe they made these changes half way through 85, thus the 1/2. Heck I dont know. If you can get it at a good deal, then BUY IT. If you dont want to, then tell me where its at and I wil go look at it.

Hey guys, this is my first post here. To answer your question, they will do around 65-70 stock. It has a two stroke, 250cc liquid cooled YZ based engine (minus the powervalve), CDI ignition, kick start, 32 mm carb, dual headlights, front and rear hydraulic disc brakes, and the air filter is located where the gas tank usually is on a motorcycle, and the gas tank is under the seat. They were only made in the U.S. for 1985 & 1986. The 1985 had a 5 speed, while the 1986 had a 6 speed. There are other small differences between the two years. They do not seem to have major problems, but the rear shock usually wears out. It is comparable to a Honda ATC 250r and Kawasaki Tecate 3. Parts can be found on ebay, but with most older atv’s, there are some parts that are discontinued. There are companies such as DG, Wiseco and Maier that make aftermarket parts. My tri-z has a DG pipe and silencer and spider trac rear tires. I have been using it this winter, and it is very stable on snow. The suspension is soft, but I don’t hit jumps too often. It starts up second kick cold. It can do about 75 with the bigger tires, and it keeps up with newer quads. It has great top end power, and will do wheelies at your command It is not the best on rocky ground.
