Default finally have time to get the bikes going... problem

hey all, i now have a little time to get my bikes going. i have an 82 250r and it dident start at first. i flushed the tank, changed the spark plug & oil. i took off the carb because its been sitting before i bought it. i put my 85's carb on it (38) and with some starting fluid and a bunch of kicks it started. but will not stay on. it only stays on for like a half a min. (just until the starting fluid is gone)...........im getting the carb that was on it rebuilt. i also took off the reed but cracked the seal. i took it off until i get a new one. could this be the problem, because its not sealed?

it could be...does this gasket seal the carb to the engine?..I know any air escaping into the engine is bad...too much air kills the engine...

Usually when you have an air leak it will start easy and then rev up with nothing stoping it. When it finally started how did it run? Does it have to compression? does it have good spark?
