I would have to say the way you ride a trike without injury is simple. Know your skill level and ride within that level. Your skill level will increase as you become more comfortable on the trike.

Don't speak from what you learned listening, but from what you experienced riding. This 55 year old kid still enjoys the rush and the pain from his 84 tecate A1. Positive intent will get you anywhere!

 

In general, you guys are spot on, but I will say that if you want to become an awsome rider you are going to have to push your self on all levels mentally physically and skill wise. If that is what you want then you can't worry too much about crashing, otherwise you won't progress. Besides that is all part of the fun, you case a jump or go cartwheeling through a whoop section and your friends get a good laugh out of it too.
