185s Engine Rebuild needed or no??
#1
Hello All,
This is my first post here, and I'm happy to find an ATV site that has a section specifically for 3-wheelers.
I was considering doing a rebuild on my unreliable 1983 185s, It smokes quite a bit, (black smoke)and is very hard to start, and sometimes just refuses to start at all.
I usually find the plug soaked upon removal, and/or badly carboned up.
I know I probably have fuel mixture problems as well, but have 2 different carb's, and both do basically the same thing.
It doesn't idle well , and will definitley stall out once it warms up, I've adjusted idle speed several times, and it still stalls out, even at higher settings. (air leak possibly?)
It appears that the spark is very, very weak , almost invisible,** but when I do get it to run its seems to perform pretty good, other than it smoking, and wanting to stall .
Another thing, when I pop a "wheelie" it will almost stall out too ..
Do you guys think i should bother with a rebuild? or is it probably just me not knowing enough about finetuning the carb?
I Don't think piston or cylinder, or anything has ever been rebuilt on this bike.
which shop manuals should i get that best describes troubleshooting these bikes.
THANKS IN ADVANCE

Black smoke is ussually a fuel problem. Blue is oil. The fuel smoke is almost eye watering. Oil smoke is mainly just stinky. It sound like it is running to rich. Play around with the adjustment screw and see what happens. Just turn it in and count the turns before you start playing around with it so you know where it was. When you do the wheelie your float doesnt working right because of the angle but it should just dump fuel out the overflow. I would check the overflow tube for a blockage. Maybe the float isnt adjusted right. It would normally leak gas though so if it isnt leaking and the overflow isnt block it is probably alright. I would mess with all that before a rebuild. My atc90 runs pretty well and it only has 95lb of compression instead of the minimum it s 150lb. It does smoke worse then any two stroke though and always starts on first pull. It is hard to say and would hate to point you in the wrong direction. Just giving you ideas.

onyx2002...
Can you do a compression test on this engine? If so... get me the #'s they will be very helpfull.
Is there oil in the muffler?
How often do you need to add oil to the engine? What oil are you using?
Could you get me a picture of the fouled spark plug?
My first impression of what you said is that it needs a upper-end; but I will help you narrow it down a bit.

Whats up Trash? You're a Mod, but not a supporting member. Just messing with you. I agree with Trash sounds like the top end needs work. My sons TRX 70 did the same thing. Re built the top end the thing runs like a champ.
