plumb04,
Do you want to send your motor off to a big engine builder such as TC Racing, Curtis Sparks, Duncan Racing, etc., or take it to a local shop? The big engine builders are really nice, but sometimes out of some people's price-ranges. The following is my 2 cents.
You can buy pre-assembled 440 kits, or you can piece one together yourself. Most of the motor-building businesses have nice 440 kits for the 400EX available. You buy this from them, ship your motor, and they do the work. If the cost is too much for you, you can always buy one of the pre-assembled 440 kits and have it installed by a local engine builing shop. I believe that some of these kits are and aren't as wild or as drastic as some of the ones companies such as Sparks, TC and Duncan offer.
Bottom-line, if you want a screaming motor, and have the money and time to send your motor off, go for it. I bet you won't be disappointed. But, keep in mind that your local shop MAY be able to do just the same work, and make your motor scream just as much for less money. Do some research on this stuff!
My advice would be to call the many larger-caliber engine shops (Duncan, TC, Sparks, and MANY more), and talk to them. See what kind of kit they have available for your type of riding and price range. Next, ask around and talk to people who have had work done at the local shops around your area. See what these people say about their motors (good & bad). Call these shops and check on prices. Basically, any competant shop should be able to do about anything and everything you want done, and will do it right whether it be a large business, or smaller one. Just look around and do some research like I said. You should be able to figure out what you want to do on your own.
Hopefully someone else can add some insight on this topic, and help you out. I hope I helped you out. If you have any more questions, I'll do my best to answer them. I bid you good luck.
