DanimalFL,
The Lakota is a fine quad. I don't know the top speed, but I would say that it goes at least 45mph since it has a 290cc engine. The quad isn't that big and there is hardly a front of the quad. It is really easy to turn the handlebar and it's really sporty and fun to drive. Since it's not a utility quad, and it's not that big, it won't be able to do all the things big quads can do and it is not as capable as a Honda Recon. But, it is so much fun to drive and it will do a sufficient job on most of the trails you ride on.

havn't seen them out yet, but have you considered the 250ex or a 300ex

I have a lakota, bought new in 1999. Top speed about 52. bought over the recon, due to more speed, shock travel, motor size, appeared better built around footpeg area. Recon has shaft drive better for utility work. Neither one is a good choice for working, trailriding is more area. Rode a recon it was fun ride. The Lakota was far better for only a few more dollars.

a Lakota is a Bayou engine in a Mojave frame.
if you can master manually shifting a quad get the Mojave.
Major question; what do you want it to do?? double as a utility quad??!! purely sport riding??!! you need it around the property for ??whatever chores??!! First time riders??!!
many issues as which ave. to take.

I got a lakota for my wife, and she likes it. The air filter is a cheasy design, but the quad is way better than a recon. the suspension is the BEST of any sport/utility quad on the market. it can handle a couple feet of air no problem. I find myself riding her quad every time I am trail blazing due to the racks(can carry tools) and the reverse gear (for when I choose the wrong path). and my 4 year old can ride it! I would recommend it to others.

What do you mean the Lakota is not a capable as the Recon? I sold my Recon and I am thinking of buying a Lakota. I was having difficulties with the Recons suspension, or lack of. I had problems being bumped off because I have no upper arm strength. My husbands says it was because of the Recons suspension. Is the Lakota any better?
