Another scam
Just when you think that people can be trusted . . . I posted one of my quads for sale in the free ads section on this site (CAVEAT - THIS POST IN NO WAY SLAMS ATVCONNECTION.COM I LOVE THE SITE, THE FORUMS AND THE FACT THAT I CAN PLACE FREE ADS, THIS IS JUST A WARNING TO ALL OF THE UNWARY - and a way for me to vent) and I got an e-mail from a "business man in Canada" looking for more info. My first clue that this was not on the up and up was his poor use of English (ok maybe he only spoke French). I so replied with the details and that payment was US dollars in cash for pick up in CA. About a week later there's a reply saying that as soon as I give him my info he'll send me a cashier's check for $5000, I keep $2500 (price of the quad) and wire $2500 to his shipper. Yeah, and I've got some ocean front property in Arizona I can sell him. I guess you can't trust anyone anymore.

Another scam
It's pretty much par for the course for most on-lilne advertising.
I had listed a trailer in the ATVConnection classifieds about a year and a half ago and got a similar response. It was almost like a form letter - where the guy (a doctor from Africa) inserted the words 'flatbed ATV trailer" in what sounded like a pat response to any ATV ad. I didn't take things as far as you did, since I recognized it for the scam that it was - you just have to be extra careful with internet dealings.
