Like kapttap, I'm no mechanic. With differential lock, does that mean all four wheels are pushing? How else would you get 4-wheel drive? EFI is electronic fuel injection? How important is that?
Any other thoughts around used or new?
I want enough power for the snow, but because of the incline, I think traction is most important. Any particular tires that help with this? I would think some tires can't have chains.
Thanks.

EFI is fuel injection. It is a nice feature to have, however on a 4-stroke ATV it is not as big of a deal as on a snowmobile. A carburated ATV with a choke will almost always start up as good as EFI. And with elevation changes, all you are really loosing is your gas miledge.
Lots of good tires out there, Swamplites are going to be my next set

For a month now I have been test driving and reading reviews and asking people. Trying to make a decision on getting my first ATV. After all the effort I finally decided to get the polaris sportsman 500 x2. I will pick it up next week. I hope its a good decision. The worst part about trying to make a desision is the reviews on the internet and in magazines. You read one and you think you have it all figured out and then the next one you read says the opposite. Finally I just stopped reading the reviews and started test driving. The honda was rulled out first because they are only 3 wheel drive ( no locking front diff ) No can am dealer in the area rulled them out. One dealer sells cats and yamaha. The owner said that the cats were better all around than the yamaha so I rulled out the yam. Then it was down to the cat and polaris. I road them alot. I think the dealers were getting sick of me riding them so I went to another town and road them more. Then I decided on the polaris because of ride and handling. They all seem to be great quality just get on alot of them and ride.
