Snow Plowing
#111
Well, two of the ATV's I was looking at are sold.
I was too busy to see them.
I have some more to see. Hopefully today.
I'm thinking I will not get PS in a used unit.
So I will look for a mid-sized quad.

Hey Guys, I'm getting ready to buy my first ATV and I'm pretty sure I have it narrowed down to a 2014 Polaris 570 Touring. My question for this thread is are there any recommendations for a plow and winch I should purchase? Are they all pretty much the same or is there a significant difference? Thanks everyone.

Polaris used to sell Warn winches then they switched to some cheap made in China bull crap so don't buy a Polaris winch. I've been using nothing but Warn winches and never had any trouble except for an old rotary switch that they quit using several years ago. I have a Polaris Glacier plow but there are many other good plows too. You have to decide if you want a front mount or a mid mount. I like the front mount a lot better.

I would go with a 2500 lb. or a 3000 lb. I've had to winch out of waist deep snow before and the 2500 lb. was just enough with a ****** block pulley setup to get back on the trail. Mid mount and front mount refer to where the plow attaches to the quad. It's also usually where the blade pivots. Some mid mount plows have a little bit hanging down so you can potentially lose some ground clearance. If it fits pretty flush with the undercarriage of the quad's frame I wouldn't worry about it.

When I had a mid mount I lost a few inches of ground clearance right in the middle of the quad where I needed clearance the most. I had to take the whole mount off every spring before I went for a ride. If I didn't the mount took a beating and had to be fixed. With the front mount I lose a fraction of an inch clearance between the front wheels. With the mid mount I had I had to lay on the ground to put the pins in. Some of the newer mounts you don't have to do that.

On my Moose the mid mount pin holes are maybe 1.5" low and if I go over some logs or something I can look back and see where they scraped (looks neat when going in belly deep snow), but I'm usually careful enough that it don't bother, the plate does give added protection too.
