Gearing for a DS?? 100mph?

First of all....
I don't care about any mumbo jumbo calculator. It's for reference and not realistic situations. If your gonna stick your neck out onto a chopping block... it's best to be real, not theoritical. What would you rather do... trust a number cruncher... or someone who's done it. And at this point.... I seem to be a little defensive. The reason being; I don't care who is who on this forum... but I don't lie. I don't need to lie. And I'm not trying to impress anyone on this forum. So I don't know why... but when someone plugs in a few numbers and says "It's just not gonna happen".... I say ... "Screw your BS calculator". It's wrong!
Gary....
I'll tell ya what. You put a $100 dollar bill on this, and this weekend I'll show you what 100mph on my DS looks like. I'll be riding 320 miles round trip this weekend in Mexico. And I'll have a couple oppurtunities to do that kind of speed. Hence the reason my DS does do that speed in the first place. And I ride with a Helmet Camera (since I'm into making movies about Mexico and the terrain/adventure), that can show you the speed on the GPS. If I don't produce 100+ on my GPS.... then by all means I'll sit back and shut the heck up. Bowing out of the forums discussion. (But... here it is again. You'd be betting against a sure thing. That's totally up to you. It'll be the easiest $100 bucks I've ever made)
Let me know.
I'm eager to know if you'll be paying for some of my trip.

BTW....
My stock... YES STOCK XR650 can only pull 98mph.
Now thats a stock motor, with 16/45 gearing. I'm not going to plug any numbers in... but from experience and my GPS... (not a speedometer than can be out of whack for anything over a given speed) I couldn't get another MPH out of the thing.
And with all these REAL WORLD experiences I'm giving you.... It takes into the altitude, wind resistance, texture of ground, my weight, gas octane, what I ate that day.... hell, a little bit of everything that lame *** calculator doesn't take into effect.
So why go against REAL WORLD when all you have is a ... well, a theory.
I feel like I'm battling either a lack of wit, or a lack of common sense. But I don't say that kind of thing unless I'm reaaaaaally frusterated with someone else's ignorance. And that... I am.
And... here's my GPS results on different machines;
'00 CBR 929 - 172mph
'00 XR 650R - 98mph
'03 DS 650 - 102mph

Johnnyairtime, Do you think its possible to reach 100mph in the quarter mile with a highly modded DS? Trying to set my DS for the quarter mile. Do you think 17/40 gearing with 22 inch hoosier's would get me there or is that two tall? My motor puts out around 70 horse. It will be running struts all around with a whelie bar and a plus 4 swing arm.

I would like to step in on this one and state that Gary is correct: but so is Johnnyairtime, to the best of his information.
Gary explained things very well when he described the loss of power as RPM increased. Also keep in mind that the wind resistance that he speaks of, is increased exponentially as the velocity increases. [so if it takes 20HP to do 70MPH, and 30HP will get you 80MPH, 40HP will not get you 90MPH!{please keep in mind that these #'s are not real, simply an example}]
Johnny is not lieing either! GPS is great at ploting and locating, and can give fairly accurate low speed calculations, but it does not give accurate high speed #'s. I am sure that several of you will dis-agree with that, but it is the nature of the system used for possitioning.
I have done extensive testing on both dyno's as well as using timing lights [thanks to LVMS] and can assure everyone that a stock DS650, with nothing but gearing changes, will not do 100MPH. A perfectly tuned DS with an ignition box, filter on the carb, and an exhaust, along with gearing and tires[22"] will still not break 100 MPH!
I was there when Greg Row "paced" the Indy car race. At no time did he even get up to the 72MPH that we all know a stock DS will do. He basicly lead the pace car around the track on a parade lap and then parked the quad. He would have loved to do more, but wasn't alowed to.
I've also looked very closely at the "stock" bike that won the Baja 2000. If stock includes internal machine work, then maybe it can be considered stock, but for the rest of the world that requires the bore to remain at 100MM for it to be considered stock, it wasn't. And considering that the 100MPH claim might have been based on GPS figures, I don't feel it did 100 anyway.
I believe that the 720 in question does 100+ MPH, it really ought to. As for a bike close to stock, I have far to much time and money wrapped up in research on my own to believe any claim otherwise. It just can't do it. I will say that cutting the fenders helps a good deal, but not enough.

Hmmm...
Looks like we got another "EXPERT" opinion....
So... I'll take my inaccurate GPS this weekend and video the speed... then when I get back, you all can pay to see the clip.... Cuz again, I'm not here to impress. My DS has a K&N, open airbox by PPD, and a pipe. But now your going to kill me... I also have a twist throttle! That has to add 10mph to the top end!!
Give me a friggin break.
Is everyone on here an "expert opinionater"???!!!
This post or piece of the forum is exactly why I stay away from them. Too many chiefs in the tribe.

Thanks for the experienced bit of first hand knowledge Don. Johnnyairtime.....don't go grab a handfull of throttle and test your machines limits on my behalf. I will not be "betting" you that you can prove me wrong unless you have a police officer radar you, measure your tires, count sprocket teeth front and back, and tear your engine down measuring and checking everything...ALL ON ONE VIDEO....and the bet is on. I see any editing and all bets are off. My purpose was not too offend....just inform. Peace guys.

my gps matches what the speedomoeter in my truck says exactly, all the way to 100mph, which is as fast as my truck will go. now I'm not making any claims towards whether or not the ds can achieve the speed that's being discussed, just adding a little tid-bit of info, and if you wanna say my truck speedo happens to be off the safe amount my gps is then that's fine too.
the gps just converts time into speed, by measuring how long it takes to get from one point to the next and then doing the math, and the instrumentation of a radar gun is no more accurate. if the gps is inaccurate at all, I would wanna guess it'd be slow, given the fact that you gotta maintain speed for a period of time to get a reading on speed in the first place because you accelerate faster than it can do its sending/receiving/calculating.
now there have been a lot of people over time claim their bike will do 100+mph, maybe they're all mistaken, lying, etc., but now I'm gonna have to go out and find out for myself because I'm so curious, and whatever my gps says I'll believe. Now I'm not stock but I am stock bored and I can very quickly and easily get up to 9200rpm in 5th gear for a gps indicated speed of 82mph with my 15/40 gearing on 20 tires. I get to that speed fairly easily, and there's no doubts with a gearing change I can get plenty more. I'll not hold my breath for 100mph, but I'll not be too awefully surprised either.
