Gearing for a DS?? 100mph?
#1
I seem to have read that Bombardier geared a DS650 to go 100mph in order to pace the Bombardier 400 Busch race. I got into a discussion with Gary of Quad Patrol and he told me I was full of sh$t and not to believe the story I read in, I believe, Dirtwheels. The Pace car must do at least 95mph in a Nascar race in order to pace a race, so the story sounded believable with the pictures and all. The DS was reportedly stock except for I think TT tires ,maybe airbox mods, and gearing. The question is, can an internally stock DS650 be geared to go 100mph and still have the power to pull that speed? Gary of quad patrol says I don't know what I am talking about and the Magazine was lying. Any comments?

Thanks Bill, NOW I DON'T FEEL SO STUPID, I made the comment on good faith and was jumped on by a couple of people. But what could I expect from a bunch of raptor owners, must be ***** envy or something like that!

now you know who the stupid ones are, most guys are cool on that stuff but a few think they know all and have never even rode with a ds, most of my raptor friends like the ds, after i let them ride it they say well it doesn't have reverse, and i realise that makes them feel better and leave it at that.

the people you talked to must be real idiots.. you could gear about any sport quad outrageously high to break 100, youd just give up any usefullness of bottom end.

I see you've pretty much got your answer....
But I run a 17/37 gearing. Not a 17/38. A tad bit taller by one tooth.
I also run the 22" ITPs.... and have no problem reaching 85mph. Clocked on my Magellan Sporttrak Pro GPS.
You can check the fact the GPS is mounted up high on my bark busters. Nice and easy to read at that speed. But you also have to remember.... you can't do that kind of speed in a quarter mile or anything. It takes a while to get there. Also... your tires start to balloon up at about 65. Once this happens... it's kinda scary... but you get used to it. Just don't make any sudden changes or radical movements...

I disagree with ANY sport quad...I doubt a stock 400ex could pull gearing that high to break 100mph...Just not enough torque. The bigger bores like DS's and Raptors can do it, so could a Banshee...probably a Predator too...but anything smaller and less powerful...I doubt it..
Just my thoughts.

Dude TyreSpinner... they have race classes, two stroke 125cc engines and smaller in race go carts all the time and they can do over 100mph... i think a honda 400ex can make as much power as a 125 at least.
