Default steel wool for exhaust packing??

I read somewhere that steel wool can be used for exhaust packing, anyone know the truth to this? I'd asume it would be harder than fiberglass to "burn out" since it's steel, but how does it work as far as sound deadening?

I always though steel wool would be a great replacement to fiber packing. I never used it though. Someone on here brought to my attention that steel wool burns really easy, try taking a match to steel wool, to my amazement it burns like crazy.
