I have had the side cover off about six times in the last couple months and the only plastic gear I have seen is the water pump gear. The main thing to remember is to be careful and not force the side cover on. When everything is lined up it will just slide on. Check your clutch actuator rack to make sure that none of the teeth are broke. That is what I have replaced three times in the last few months.

I doesn't have to line up with anything, the gears just have to mesh. The clutch rod that the cable hooks to needs to be lined up. The easiest way that I have found is to make a mark on the cases where it is now and it will turn as the case comes off. When you slide it back on you will see if it is back where it is supposed to be. Good luck and make sure you soak your plates and fibers in oil before you put them in.
