Default My fan died again, bearings this time

My first fan died when the bike was abot a year old, the windings fried - unlike the typical brush wires coming apart.

My replacement that I purchased from Offroadwarehouse.com just died, over 2 years later. This time its the bearings that have failed - they are rattling and making all sorts of noise, and the fan is running very slow as a result.

Both times that it died was at Little Sahara Oklahoma, isn't that odd? I go there over 2 years ago, it dies, I return last week, it dies again!!! Its like the Burmuda triangle of Dunes!!

Hightower, when you get into your down season (Winter over there?) you should tear apart the front of your quad, pull the radiator etc and weld up some tabs so you can mount your next fan just like the newer DS650s. (This is what a really really nice buddy of mine did for me on my 2001 DS650.) Also, you might PM MRDS650, he told me he mounted his fan some other way that was similar to the new style but without the hassle. If there was an EASY way to fix the fan problem, that would be the hot ticket!

this particular fan has lasted 2-1/2 years, the bearings just died this time. the rubber mounts would not have prevented that, but none the less I would very much like to just as you suggest Blackhawk.
I do believe the most important thing to make a fan last on the old frame is proper install - you must perfectly shim the mounting so the plastic frame does not distort upon tightening or it will be bound and cause excess amperage draw run warmer and fry over time. the new rubber mounting system elliminates this possibility, making install much easier, not to mention cutting down on engine vibes to the fan.

I don't get a down season, I ride all year, I only draw the line at 0 degrees, anything above 0 and I'm good to go, just don't leave any skin exposed!!
But I do plan to tear down and powder coat maybe another year from now, and I wll definitely go to rubber mounting at that time.

Lucky wiseguy! We '01 guys used to be able knock on the '00's, self priming oil line, etc......now we're archaic!
