Default FIRTST TIME DRAG RACER!

well i made a three hour drive yesterday to ride a 500 acre park in noth carolina. the day started horrible because i woke up sick and had a temp of 101.2......... needless to say i was still going riding. i felt crappy all day but had a good time. the park had a open area where guys would line up and drag and they also had a real drag strip with a tree and all. i decided to try out the ds. now remember i ride trails and what not and never dragged. i got beat by at least two lengths to a z400. i talked to the guy and asked him some tips on what i was doing wrong and also what he had done to the z. he said he has a little done to the engine but i could see other stuff. alba pipe, he said it had a k&n and jetted with a cdi. i sucked at the open area. it was sand by the way. so i practiced and after pointing the bike to the sky a few times and a stall in there. i went to the real strip. the start area was a hard clay/gravel/ dirt mix and the track was hard pack dirt. i started launching in second and got down my launches better than before. and i beat a raptor, 2 lengths, a couple of z's and a couple of other little bikes. i got to race that z that trashed me in the sand. i beat him by a half length. the ds was spinning alot out of the box and i always seemed to loose out of their as well. the top end let me pass em' though. i need a cdi because i felt like i was on the limiter too fast and i also wondered about gearing. also some hints on launching would be helpful. i am just doing this for fum so anyone whos says turbo or busa motor has got me all wrong. i just like to hold my own.

sounded like a real good time marred by a cold/flu. was you running dirt tires in the sand? also was the z running dirt tires too? just curious. second gear starts are essential also do you run the stock front sprocket 16t? a 15t would help allot too. drag racing is very addictive.

Did you go to Big Dawgs? The rev limiter would be a help, and like he said. 2nd gear starts will help.

yea i went to big dawgs.... it was a good time but i would have been better off without the sickness. anyway i do run a stock setup for gearing and the guy who had the quick z had the stock dunlop tires on his bike. i run maxxis razrs. what gearing setup would make for a better launch but not lose all my top end?

I would put on a 15 tooth front sprotcket...You can launch in second gear.. But if you do that very much. You will take out you clutch.. You need to get better clutch springs.. You can get them from most any notor builder ( TVI< MR HP or rod woods ) I am sure there are other to.. But get at least 60% springs.. I run 70% springs From TVI and i launch in second all the time and my clutch still works great....

there is a gearing calculator some ware I failed to find it. I think blackhawk has one his site. that give you a good apx. top ens speed you would lose. I don't think its much. for one thing you will accelerate allot faster. sprockets are fairly inexpensive $15 or so @ rocky mt atv. so even if you did not like it your not out much.
