Problems
#1
I have an 01 DS650 with alot of bolt on goodies and some pretty stuff also including a powdercoated frame. My question is do any of you guys have or had in the past a problem like mine. It started when I speed shift with the gas wide open and hitting the clutch the motor would cut like I was letting off the gas. It went on for a week or so and then it began to run the battery down. I thought rectifier so I tried another that was good and no change. I then thought maybe a ground or stator. I had the stator checked and they said it was good. Ive tried everything from a new harness to on off switch to silinoid. I had a strange thing happen now that when I push the start button nothing. If I pull the clutch in the silinoid clicks in back. I thought maybe since I have to pull in the clutch when its in neutral that switch was bad. I took the switch out and pushed the button and nothing. I put it back in and it clicks. I think its grounding somehow when the clutch lever touches the switch. Man I dont have much hair left to pull out after this weekend. Its gettting fire from both coils but now it wont even turn the starter over. The main ground to the frame is good and the coils are grounded. Anything you guys know or suggest would be great. Im ready to strike a match.

Wierd indeed,
things I would do:
1) First to test the Stator and Rectifier when quad is started and at idle the voltage measurement should be 14.2 volts.
2) bypass ALL switches you don't absolutely have to have, clutch(neutral Safety switch) ,starter button.
3) dissconnect light switch from wire harness.
bigger.

Double check the ground point on the frame. Grind off the powder so the cable and wires will contact bare metal. This issue or similar symptoms come up now and then usually turn out to be bad ground connection.

Thanks guys and its not the CDI. I have done the grinding around where the battery ground connects to the frame but I had someone suggest it might be where the motor mounts are connected to the motor. At this point Ill try anything. The powdercoating is very thick.

Sounds very possible. If thats the case instead of removing the motor and gringing the finish around the mounts, you can add a short 4-6 ga. cable from the frame ground to a bolt on the engine in an inconspicuous location. Its an idea anyway.

I have a '05 DS and haven't had your exact problem, but I had one very simular occur. It started with, I have never had to pull in my clutch lever to start my bike. I went to start it, and I could not until I pulled the clutch in. So no big deal I dealt with that for awhile, and then it just would not start. I still to this day don't really no what happened, but after sitting for a day, I have never had the same problem again.
