Before you get rid of anything, PM me. I might trade you the tires you need.

kenye we need more information to be of any real help.

yes the tuning could be off, but there are other problems that can cause these issues besides jetting - valve adjustments, carb float valve allowing overflow of bowl, etc.

we need to know what carb you have. if it is a stock carb, there is no accelerator pump. only the aftermarket Mikuni TM45 has an accelerator pump. as far as tuning goes, it depends on which of the two carbs you have, and of course pipe condition can effect tuning. if the packing is 4 or 5 years old then it would indeed need replaced as mentioned by mean650 mentions.

but first and formost you need to be certain the gas is good - old and bad gas is more common than most realize, and if you are unsure how long this bike has set prior to buying then you need to go ahead and drain it all dry and refresh her.

i know the gas is good, to be honest i don't know if its a stock carb or not, i'm assuming it is, its a flat carb, Mikuni. i'm starting to think it might be my valves, i know the guy i got it off hadn't had it in for a check up in awhile. All the bearings are shot on it so i'm going to have them all replaced and when there getting done i'm gonna have em take a look at it and see if they can't figure out whats going on. Does anyone know of any good websites to get parts, i'm looking for plastics (i am yet to find aftermarket), thumb trottle assembly, it has the twist on it, tires and wheels, i'd like to pick this stuff up used, i'm really looking for the 02-03 orange and black baja plastics set up, if any one can help me with that would be great, and thanx everyone for trying to help me with the carb/valve/who knows problem i'm having but the guy i buy all my parts of said he would take a look at it cheap so it'll save me a headache

the stock carb is a vacuum slide, if yours is a flat slide as you mention then it is not the stock carb.

there are no aftermarket plastics for the DS, the factory plastic is as cheap as any aftermarket would be though. sometimes plastic is for sale on e-bay.

good call on the tune-up, always a good idea.

kenye,

Welcome to the forum - Hightower is right that we need to get more info from you to really 'help.' First, you said the bearings are bad did the guy ride through lots of water? Depending on what made them go bad might mean you should be replacing or repairing other stuff. I think Hightower is familiar with that sort of wear - if I recall correctly he does some water running on his machine. (I almost never see water on my DSs.) Next we need to make SURE as to what carburetor you have - perhaps some of the guys on here can find links to pictures of a TM45 and the stock BSR42 carburetor. Then you could say 'that is the one' and we'll all know 100% for sure. Next is your tires - I would strongly suggest keeping those tires - I upgraded to that exact size as have a lot of people and they are quite good. However there are situations where the smaller tires might be warranted but I'd advise you to consider keeping them at least for now. (But do talk to the guys who want to buy them or trade since if you really do need to get rid of them that could be great for you.) Front sproicket - a lot of guys when they upgrade to the 22/23" tire combo will change to a 15 tooth front sprocket instead of the factory 16 tooth. Go out to the garage and count the teeth on the sprocket. Also a good time to inspect the chain and sprockets for wear. If the teeth are hooked then they need to be replaced. I'm pretty sure if the machine has been run in water than the sprockets will wear faster meaning you may need to buy a set soon. Valve adjustments - don't worry about anything else as far as how the machine is running until your valves are adjusted properly. You'll be wasting your time trying to make the machine run correctly if your valves aren't properly adjusted - do this FIRST!
