Default The Truth!!..on CDI's

Ok..whats the deal with the lesser expensive CDI boxes for a DS. Are all the CDI's in the $120.00 range a Pro-Comm unit?? I bought a SRP unit for about $115.00 around 9 months ago, have had no problems until recently...busted a tooth on my 12/52 starter gear. I read that his could be caused by my cdi. I was lucky that this gear was the only problem..I hope. I went back to the stock CDI because of fear of failure again. I really like the little extra rpm and want to know which CDI I can buy that hasn't had the famed "timing advance at low rpm" problem I keep hearing about...causing backlash and sometimes major $$ repairs. I would love a Vortex, but for my mods..end cap. carb, ported intake...I find it hard to justify $300.00.

Advice?? Is the Big Gun any different than a Pro-Comm "re-badged"?

The Big Gun CDI is a Procom with a Big Gun sticker on it.

I bought a Vortex and love it!

I was having starter backlash with another, cheaper brand CDI. I bought the Vortex and have not had that problem. It cost more than the other CDI but cost less than costly engine repairs.

What about the RWI unit, it eliminates the rev limit all together.
Does it cause this "backlash" everyone is referring to? It does not advance the timing does it?
Thanks,

Try Ebay. Im picking up a Vortex on another Predator website for $200. The guy is parting out his bike so I offered him 200 and he took it.

yea the big gun is made by procomm BUT..... just because it is the same manufacturer doesnt make it the same. big gun contracts procomm to build thir boxes with THEIR own timing advance specifications. the problem with the starting backlash is directly related to that timing advance. a procomm and a big gun are not the same. call big gun and procomm and find out for yourself.

Try Marky at ODP for the vortex. The nice thing about it is that its flexible, it will grow with your mods. I dont know about the big gun and I wouldnt risk it. I have heard the damage they can cause can be up to 500 bucks. Just my .02

I have never heard of this problem at all till now. Thats why I stick to the ol rule, if its that much cheaper than the rest, there is a reason why.
