Questions about carbs and compression
#1
I took my DS to the dunes recently for the first time this year and was disappointed to find that it would not run. It would pop and snort, but wouldn't stay running. I discovered that the rubber boot between the carb and the intake manifold was cracked. Can you believe that there isn't a Bombardier dealership on the Oregon coast?? With all those dunes are you kidding???!!! Anyway, I called Jose at TVI in Hillsboro and picked up a boot on my way home. All summer and not one hour on the DS. After getting home, I have cleaned out the carb and reinstalled it, but the quad will not run. Sometimes I can get a pop out of it, but it will not start. I noticed that I had a spare screw after reassembling the quad and figured that I must have left it out of the carb somewhere, but after taking it back apart tonight, I cannot see where it would go. It's the same size as the ones holding the throttle linkage housing onto the side of the carb. Also, it has a washer on it. Does anyone have any ideas? Does anyone have a diagram? I didn't take anything else apart, so if it didn't come off the carb, I have no idea where it came from.
It occured to me that with the lean condition in the combustion chamber, I might have burned a hole in the piston. Does anyone know how much compression a stock DS should have? Hate to think too much about that...
Thanks,
Mike

It's almost impossible to burn a hole in the piston on a four stroke. Unless you are using heavy NOS.

Not sure about your mystery screw but if it came out of the carb it needs to be in there. Are you sure your getting fuel to the combustion chamber. The float level may be set wrong. Put the choke full on and try starting it a few times. Then take out a plug and see if it is wet. If it not...well then check the fuel supply, float level and all that. If it is wet. then while the plu is out. reconnect it to the spark plu boot and hold it aginst the side of the head so the plug is grounded to the head. Then turn the key on and the kill switch on. Now crank the motor over. Now look at the plug and see if your getting spark. If not then. try new plugs first. If you do get spark. Then I would check the valve gaps next.
