Default how fast is a outlander 800???

I dont see why anyone would think its wrong to talk about how fast their atv goes.Speed is very important to alot of riders and if they want to brag about it then let them do it.Seems like ever kind of vehicle made has had some kind of racing event such as cars in drag racing, trucks in mud racing, hell even horses have races so why cant we talk about atv speed. If some guys just run through ruts and over downed trees then go ahead but some of us might like black top roads and high speeds.

I'll write honda and yamaha and tell them to slow all the atvs down to 40mph since the only place we can run is on rutted out trails and mud nationals.

See what I was getting at. ATV in case some of you didnt know means all terrain vehicle, and no that doesnt mean they're meant to be used flying up and down black top roads. Now don't get me wrong, on occassion it might be necessary to get to the next trail, but that's about all the black top and ATV should see, not to mention it wears down the tires prematurely. Like you mentioned, buy a street bike or use your car to go down the road to see how fast you can go. If anything, I might be interested in how fast and ATV can accelerate, I love snappy four wheelers doesn't mean I need one that will eventualy do 85. I had better find one very smooth, very long trail to do that. Even if you want to race four wheelers, those guys that race them aren't too interested in how fast they can go because the straight aways even on a motcross track aren't long or straight enough to go that fast. About the only time I could see the importance is if you're racing in a desert event and have some very long fast fire roads to fly down.

Some people forget what it's all about and are fixated on the speed thing as if that's the sole purpose of four wheeling. And I'm guessing here but I think that's probably less than one percent of all ATV owners use there quad to race down a fast straight fire road in a desert event. As for making top out at fifty, I think they should invest a little more time in making them a little more durable, reliable and versatile.

Dont get me wrong,I ride on dirt and sand most of the time but I do love getting on a long straight-away (black top ,gravel ,dirt or sand)and running my atv fast. All I'm saying is that almost every vehicle ever made there has always been a fasination with trying to see how fast they will run and to see how much faster we can make them run and atvs are no different. And even though atvs are made for all terrain some guys will still like to run them on other surfaces.I've seen atvs on drag strips and round tracks with hard surfaces.Even the tire companies make tires for hard surfaces. And I do believe alot of riders do like the high speed on atvs.Just look at how many threads on this site is about speed.Thats the way this thread got started.

i am not into "just how fast" my outlander will go. i use mine for almost every kind of purpose it was built for and maybe then some. as far as them topping out at 40-50.....that is stupid. our outlanders run 300ft faster than that. yes i have run mine in sand drags. an atv is for the purpose of what the OWNER buys it for. in the summer i drive my truck to work and ride my wheeler's to town or where ever else i go. do i ride the highway all the time? no, but when i do have to get on the highway i sure dont wanna run 50mph to get hit by a car. outlanders carry themselves very well at speed on the highway. atv......just wait til it truly does mean ALL terrain. we'll get blinkers and horns in the future. About the only thing "top speed" gives you is some sort of rough estimate in regards of the overall usable power the machine puts out. If ATV A has a top speed of 65MPH and ATV has a top speed of 50 MPH one can get some rough estimates from those numbers if you take into account other information from the specs of the machine such as weight and engine displacement etc. You can make a rough comparison that all other factors being equal (suspension, tires, drive train and such)) ATV A probably has more usable power.

What does all that mean that mean in the real world? Not a heck of a lot.

I rarely find myself hitting 40 even on gravel when running around to various parts of the farm. Most of the time it's around 20. On the trails it's not even worth looking at the speedometer. What matters is handling, ride, usable engine power and of course reliability. The fact that it can go 70 on the blacktop means precisely squat if it handles like pig on the trail, sputters and dies in the water, gets stuck in the mud or rides like a buckboard. I don't want to have to tell my friends "Well, no it's not great on the trail and you can't get it dirty or wet but it sure goes fast."

What I don't understand is why, when a thread is clearly titled, that its about speed and performance, why some who clame not to care about such things bother to read it all and lecture those of us that do care about speed and performance. These machines are not cheap and neither are the mods we use to make them go faster and faster. So for the most part you are talking to adults that just like to go fast. If no one cared about such things we would all still be stuck riding 200 cc machines, and BRP would not be in business anymore. Speed, power, and poerformance sells and does so on a big scale. There are not a lot of 200s left on the market, but there sure are a lot of machines in the 500 up to 800 catagory and more offerings being addded all the time.
