The red light can be either low oil pressure or excessive coolant temperature. The oil dipstick is on the left side (when looking from the rear) and is between the black dash (where the key and the red light are) and the front fairing. The dipstick is black.

The oil level may be fine, but you may not have good oil pressure. Run the motor and take the dipstick out. Look into the tank and see if you can see the oil cavitating back from the the return line. If not, your oil pump may be bad. You may have a bad oil pressure sensor, which causes the red light to stay on. The sensors go bad most often from getting wet, like if you washed the bike. The oil pressure sensor is located on the back part of the motor, in the center facing up. It is black, and has a little wire that attaches to the top of it. Look beyond where the colored heat shield attaches to the header pipe, and you should see it. A new one costs about $12 from the dealer.

On the right side of the bike, looking from the rear, you will see both the radiator cap and the clear overflow reservoir. You need to check the coolant level in both of these. Good luck.

Have you changed the oil lately? I had the same problem last week come to find out their is a bleeder screw right next to the oil filter that bleeds the air out of the system. Bled that and everything has fine since.

One thing to check also is your electric coolant sensor. The shop manual says you can check this with a propane torch and a multimeter. Measure the resistance between connector on the top of temperature sensor and threads. The multimeter should indicate an infinite resistance (O.L.), if not change the temperature sensor. Next, heat the temperature sensor above 115°C (239°F). The resistance should be 0.1 ohms. If not, change the temperature sensor.
