Default '03 DS650 Baja Clutch & Jet issue-need help

I have a '03 Baja that hasnt been ridden much over the years.

I figure it probably has 50-75 hrs on it maybe. It sat for the last 4 years in a garage, but a couple months ago I took it out and took the carb off, cleaned it(it wasnt gummy or dirty at all)bought a new battery and changed the oil. It starts right up, just like the old days. I did that about 2 months ago, and since then ive been starting it up regularly. I have taken a new interest in it and 3 weeks ago put a new Yoshi Slip on and Hyper CF wheels and new Razr2 Tires. Oh and a Big gun rev box.....all the stuff I should have bought when I was riding it.

Anyway to the point, now i notice that the clutch doesnt want to disengage all the way. (the cable is adjusted all the way out already) When I put it into first gear, I can feel the gear hitting the shift lever and I would have to press hard to get it into gear. Well I obviously am not going to be doing that, so, I want to know what clutch to get. I have gotten mixed reviews between aftermarket and stock. Also since I have put the yoshi pipe on, it pops a little when descellerating, so I need to go up on the main jet? I live in Florida where its flat ..... Please advise about the clutch and jet. What to use and where to get them. TIA for any advice....
sorry for filling the whole page up...just wanted to give some background in case it had any bearing.
Does anyone know anything about this device? ATV Parts & Quad Parts - Performance ATV & Aftermarket Quad Parts

thanks again.

I just installed the Barnett clutch w/ the extra plate from Ebay & have no problems w/it so far. I've read that the Barnett springs are brittle though but I'll ride it as is to test for myself. If you want you can give Ron Woods a call for some better springs... Also I'd pull out the clutch cable & look it over. Might be rusted bad or in need of some WD-40 to loosen it back up.

As far as your "decel-pop", it's usually caused by a lean condition from your pilot jet not the main jet. Might just have to reclean your pilot jet & the port there. I ride my DS in Phoenix Az sometimes, (approx 800' above sea level) not sure how much higher OR lower you could be in Florida. But my stock pilot works great there & where i live about 4500'. I could spend the next hour or 2 writing up how to tune your pilot but there's a few write ups here that do a better job of it than I could ever do.

Good luck w/your DS man! One other thing if you haven't already done it. Do the OMR stock carb mods! I just did most of it today & it makes BIG differance. I just have to wait for the recommended air jet to come in & I'll be set. So far the gain in power is just as dramatic as adding the exhaust tip or a new slip on!

Thumbs up Thanks

Thanks for the re:

I will take your advice, although I have no idea where the pilot jet is.

I was told that the main jet was under a screw on the bottom of the bowl.

I can rebuild a Chevy350 like no-ones business...but these engines im lost in trying to fix....besides, I was never good with carbs....even with the chevys.

By the way....here in Florida im at or maybe even slightly under sea-level...sounds kinda scary ...

Eric Oldham says he recommends the ....um...cant remember the name right now....something like dial a jet...or dyno jet.... If i get that will that make jetting easier for me? Not having to take the carb off every time I need to jet it....

I found some stuff on this site like you recommended Oldham's Stock Carb fixxes....but most sound scary to me with no experience....and with no pics to go by.

Anyway...I mainly just wanted to thank you.

Thanks again,
Von

No prob man. I know how you feel about tearing into these things. Before I got my DS I couldn't tell you the differance between a 2 stroke & a 4 stroke!

The DS is pretty easy to work on compared to other quads out there. Once i opened up the carb and head (w/the help of drawings from OEM parts suppliers & all the write ups here & other forums) it wasn't too bad. Now its a breeze to rejet when I go to different places to ride.

As for the carb mods, on page 4 about half way down there's a guy that goes by "Stugots" who has some helpfull pics of the carb mods. Just check out his public profile & go to his albums. I hope he don't mind too much putting his name out there, but they are some real good pics & helped me out alot when I did my mods

another old site to peep out is DS650.net". I don't know if anyone maintains it anymore but there's still alot of good info there too. There's a couple good carb tips there that'll make tweaking your DS less painful... Have fun man!

All of the DS links and archived info can be found over at NMR. TheStir has saved pretty much all of the information for us DS folks in one spot. Good luck.
