Default 3000 Lb. Warn wiinch problems

I have a 300 lb. Warn winch that came with my 2009 Can-Am Outlander 650 Max XT, and I just took it off because last weekend all of a sudden it would no longer catch when I winched in. (In fact you can pull on it and it makes a noise kind of like a ratchet wrench going backwards.) A local dealer said this is often caused by people turning the direction **** too hard, and breaking some rather delicate part as a result.

Does this make sense, and is there perhaps a better (tougher) brand of winch I can get? Or is it perhaps some other problem?
