DS 650 battery question
#1
Are the batteries on the DS a cheap item? I seem to remember some problems spoken of on this forum. My battery couldn't start my DS today. Sat for about two weeks. I haven't had a chance to ride it lately with all the rain from tropical storm Allison down here. I had been starting it about every 3rd or 4th day when I couldnt ride and it always started it no problem. I have five months warranty left so if it is bad it won't be a problem. Just wanted to know if it is common or not. Later

Has anyone had a corrosion problem on their battery terminals? I haven't but I'm gonna put some of this gel stuff they make for battery terminals. It prevents corrosion. I have used it on my truck battery and seems to work well. Autozone carries it. corroded terminals could keep the full charge from getting to the battery. later

Does anyone else have concerns with the battery being exposed. I made a polycarbonate shield to enclose it. Hopefully it will protect it from any rocks that may get kicked up from the rear tires.

<< Is the Ds's charging system supposed to recharge battery?Every once in awhile my battery needs charging....maybe after 20-30 starts, recharge & it's good for another 20-30 starts. >>
Even though the DS does recharge the battery when running I just ordered one of the Battery MINDer chargers to keep the battery charged up as mine will sit for weeks at a time without being started. This last weekend it was about 30 degrees and it didn't crank over real fast. $40 plus shipping and if it does what it says it is a lot cheaper than buying batteries.

My Buddy Sam had the same problem as DS650Dave, but it would run after changing it - then just loose power and die after about 10 or so min. of riding. We found it to be the black box under the air box. I think it was around $100 to replace it.

I have had my ds for about 18 months. i am currently on my third batery. i seem to think that it is actually over charging the battery and killing it. every time i replace it it will run fine for many months then go cuput again. i dont know and havent really bothereed to check it out that much. the funny thing is when i took the bad battery to the dealer he checked it and said it was charged perfect. those things cost $120 a pop at my dealer it aint cheap. It is runnin fine right now . im sellin it right now if any one is interested. i know the battery problem can be fixed. Time for a Cannibal.
