My 2000 does the same thing. So does my friends 2001. I've heard from other riders that I've talked to that theirs does the same thing. I'm pretty much convinced that it's just the nature of the beast. Still, take it to you dealer and get it checked out because you might just have something wrong with your bike. But I can definetly tell you that alot of bikes out there experience that rattle. It's still anoying but I don't think anything's wrong. Someone here suggested it was the dempression mechanism but like I said before, take it in and get it checked out.

my 2001 ds did the samething at a certain rpm.I finally found out what it was.The back foot rest under the plastic, there is steel rods and they will rattle againts the plastic but this only happens at certain rpms.I stuck sticky foam strips in between the rods and plastic and solved the problem!

well my friend,i can help you with the plastic under the handlebars.the yellow plastic is vibrating against the black tank cover at the top edge of the yellow plastic.i took velcro and run it along the under side edge of the yellow plastic.just peel the stripes of tape off of the velcro and stick it to the yellow nose piece and the black tank cover.make sure you run it the entire length of the yellow plastic then stick it to the tank.i also trimmed the yellow plastic on the edge under the handlebars where it comes to a point then starts to drop down toward the headlight.i just rounded it off pretty good.hope it helps.CHOP

300exSTER, at very low idle speed it could be your auto. compression release lever tapping on the cam. It has a small return spring that makes the lever tap on the end of the cam when it returns. It should go away if you turn your idle up a little. If you think it is a serious problem, have your dealer check it out.
